i need help with the law on legally leaveing in texas?
i ran away when i was 14, the cop said i could leave my house and go live with my grandma when i was 17, i am now 17 and my dad is telling me that he talked to some family lawyer and the law says i can’t leave unless i get emancipated by a judge to have the rights of an 18 year old, or if he gives me permission, and he says he won’t, so i have to stay until im 18. is this right? or is he lying? i know i can’t own property yet, but can i leave his house without his permission, legally?

Your father is correct

Basically, until a child is eighteen years old he or she does not have the right to move out against the wishes of a parent. At age seventeen, however, you do have the right to petition a court to be emancipated from your parents’ control.
The emancipation law in Texas is codified in the Texas Family Code at Chapter 31. If you want to learn more about how to become emancipated, I suggest you start there. A link to the Texas Family Code is below.
