How do you fie divorce papers without a lawyer?
A friend of mine is separating from her husband and wants to file for divorce. She is saving up for lawyers fees but someone told me today that you could do it yourself for only 0. We live in Houston if that makes a difference. Does anyone have any info or advice on this issue?

Yes , Texas is a no fault divorce state and can be done without a lawyer if they can both agree to the terms. I can give you advice but the best way to start is with local legal aid. The forms are available. The key is to come to an agreement on all issues.

yes i live in houston too
last year when i was about to file for divorce all i did was go to the court house (family justice court house by congress n praire st across the big bldg where u get the marriage license)
you can file your self, just pay a small fee, i dont remember if it was 200 or less. you may need to consult a lawyer if you are fighting over property or child custody…thats it

If it is an Uncontested Divorce, with no children or property involved..yes, your friend can file…Just go to the clerk of the courts and ask for a Divorce package. I had to pay a small fee for the file, here in Florida, go through the package and have a zillion papers Notarized and when I returned the package..that is when you pay and set up the Court date. Good Luck…

You just go down to the court house and ask for the papers to file for divorce. Once you complete them, you will take them back to the court house and file them…this is where the expensive filing fee comes in. You will then have to have a third party person, not involved in the case and is over the age of 18 serve the papers to him. Its always a good idea to have your local sheriff’s department to it for a small fee.
He will have 30 days to contest the divorce. If he doesn’t, then you will go back to the court and file something else (I forgot what the name of the form is), and then you will receive a court date. Once you go to court, it will take 6 months and one day for the divorce to be final. However, if you have property, large amounts of cash, or children, it will not be so cut and dry.
Good luck!
