Can a woman on welfare afford a divorce lawyer?
I have a friend who wants a divorce but his estranged wife is on welfare and is threatening to seek a divorce lawyer. Could someone on welfare afford a divorce lawyer? Welfare is this persons only source of income, so I don’t see how this is possible.

Just remember that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Although he’d be better off to file himself unless he wants it to drag out.

Sadly, the government will ‘give’ her a lawyer for free. Isn’t that nice, she never has to work for anything, just suck the life out of hard working Americans that can’t afford a lawyer.

Depends. Some states will actually provide a lawyer, especially if there is a child involved. Also, some lawyers will do a divorce for a flat fee, sometimes as low as $500-$700. Unless there is a child involved, what’s his worry? Are there huge amounts of assets or something?
And to those who speak of those on welfare "sucking tax dollars", there are many single moms on welfare who paid into the system for a long time before getting any bennies. They are probably taking some time out to raise the kids they are left with after their husbands walk out on them, at least until they go to court and get some child support. A couple of years home with mom can work wonders on the outcome of a child. Sticking young children and babies in daycare does way more damage to your precious system than a few years of cash. These kids of stay at home moms will come out more secure, stable and better educated, and far more likely to get jobs and contribute instead of ending up young parents themselves, or as delinquents or convicts.

No, I doubt it , though the lawyer could seek payment
from what he is able to get from the husband…

Depending on what state this person lives in she could get a free public defender and she would be able to acquire a divorce.

There is such a thing called "Legal Aide" Have her contact her Social Service office and ask for the number.

Legal aid is the place to go for advice. If income is low enough they can provide some help.
